Branta Birding Lodge, overlooking Durankulak Lake, is situated close to the international motorway E-87, just one hour drive from Varna (in Bulgaria) and Constanta (in Romania); all major top birding locations, outstanding protected areas and excellent wildlife sites of botanical interest along the Black Sea coast can be visited easily. The lodge is located 2 miles from the beach, 5 minutes walk from wetlands (with open pastures and farmlands around) and 3 miles from the Romanian border.
In a superb location overlooking Lake Durankulak and the Black Sea, with comfortable rooms, flexible meal times and fantastic birding on the doorstep, the Branta Lodge makes an excellent base for birding this part of Bulgaria.
Durankulak Lake is known especially for its spectacular wintering of Red-breasted Geese but many birdwatchers visit also Durankulak during springtime, as this area is known for its large variety of breeding South-Eastern specialities.
In addition to the ecological approach we also have many important sites of archaeological interest on both sides of the border. For example, on the Bulgarian side, the “Big Island”, situated on Durankulak Lake, is just 300 metres from Branta Birding Lodge. There are the first known stone buildings in Europe.
Access – Varna Airport is an International Airport at about 55 miles (1 hour drive) from Branta Birding Lodge. The collection from Varna airport and return will cost you 80 Euro. For this service we are available on request.
It has never been easier to reach the Bulgaria’s Black Sea as British Airways now flies direct to VARNA (just south of Durankulak). It is also possible to fly to Burgas. For this we take an extra charge of EUR 75 (one way) to cover our travel expenses.
